Five Months

Harper is now five months old (a couple of weeks ago) and is showing more and more personality these days. She has discovered a high-pitched squeal at an ear piercing decibel! She has also recently cut her first tooth on the bottom so, of course, she is chewing on her fingers and anything else she can get her hands on! Here are lots of pictures captured in the last month since Christmas...

Now that Harper is rolling over, she sometimes sleeps on her stomach. Here is a picture of her first nap on her stomach.

I also find Harper like this at times, poor girl. A mention in our childbirth classes of how bumper pads are potentially unsafe made a lasting impression on concerned father Brent. I therefore eventually lost the bumper pad battle. I took a photograph of her in this unfortunate pose to show Brent the flip side dangers of crib slats. :)

Harper's new skill of semi-sitting up if she has her hands there for support

A sweet smile...

...and a mischievous little grin

Many moons ago, my very talented mother crocheted several adorable sweaters, which my brother and I both wore as babies. They now fit Harper, and I just love that she is getting to wear them! We took a little photo shoot of Harper in the red one. Check out all that drool too!

I love how Harper will stare at our faces and put her little hands on our cheeks...I still have to take care to keep my hair out of her grasp though...ouch! :)

Sticking out her tongue is a new fun trick these days as well as blowing bubbles!

Since cutting her first tooth, Harper has adopted this interesting expression, which we affectionately call her "old man lips" expression. I guess it makes her gums feel better.

Finally, on a completely random note, I have to put in a plug for my latest love...putting things on hold at our local library! If you have a library card, all you have to do is get on the library website and put whatever you want on hold. Right now I am slowly plowing through all the seasons of Gilmore Girls, and also Alias.

The library sends you an e-mail when the items are waiting for you, and there is even a drive through at the back of the library! So I simply drive up, hand them my card through the window, and they give me my holds. I don't even have to get the stroller out! Plus they don't have late fees at our library...greatness.

The latest out-of-control bow...love it!

Four Months and the Holidays

We had Harper's four month doctor's appt. last week. Here are her stats:

Weight: 15 lbs., 2 oz. (75%)
Length: 26 in. (95%)
Head: 16 3/4 in. (85%)

Harper is doing great, and she just started rolling over. We knew she was getting close because she would hang out on her side, but finally she went all the way onto her tummy. Way to go, girl! Her hair has also grown and might be a whopping 1/8 of an inch now! I rub it so much in sheer delight that I am probably going to make it fall out.

"I see my mom and dad using this thing, but I'm not sure yet how it goes."

In other news, we have been hit from all sides by repairs. I guess when it rains, it pours! In less than a month's time we have had: three car repairs all of which involved tow trucks, our sink broke, our toilet broke, our computer hard drive crashed and we got a parking ticket. I am beginning to wonder who I need to "make right" with in this world, because I think I have offended somebody! :) But we have fixed everything for the moment (knock on wood), and I'm pretty excited about our new sink!

It has been great having Brent home for two weeks! At the beginning of the week, we went on this hike we like to take because the weather was so nice. We hiked about four miles and Harper did not stay awake for long.

At the beginning...

...about five minutes into the hike

Warning...if there are any children reading this post, the following discussion may not be appropriate.

I think I am one of very few children maybe that grew up never believing in Santa. When my mom found out as a child after recognizing the mall Santa as being a family friend, she felt a little betrayed and decided that she always wanted to be absolutely truthful with us. So we played along with the traditions and had presents signed from Santa, etc., but I always knew it was a game. I knew not to tell other children, and I felt pretty honored that the truth would be entrusted to my brother and me even at a young age. Brent did believe in Santa, though, and so we will have to decide how we want to proceed with Harper next year or the next!

Since I don't have that experience to draw from, it might be weird for me to fully commit to the Santa charade. But then again, since almost all kids find out about Santa at some point and then choose to continue the tradition with their own children, it must be an overall positive experience, right? Like the fun of the magic outweighed the disappointment of the reveal. So anyway, it probably doesn't have to be a big deal either way, but it's an interesting thing for Brent and me to work through as new parents.

Harper with "business casual" Santa. As soon as we left, he began texting someone so don't think this Santa is not "with it" simply because his outfit is a bit misguided. As soon as she sat down, Harper immediately latched onto Santa's beard, and he had a difficult time prying it out of her little hand.

On Christmas Eve...I can't believe Harper has already seen snow twice!

Three Months

It's hard to believe that Harper Belle is three months old now...I know every parent says that. Her conversations are becoming quite in-depth, sprinkled in with lots of adorable laughs. She is grabbing things right and left including my hair by the fistfuls! She no longer needs to be swaddled when she sleeps, and she has found her thumb, which is super cute and very handy. It might not be super cute if she is sucking it eight years from now, but we'll cross that bridge later, right?

Concentrating very hard to spin a toy with her hand for the first time

Over Thanksgiving we spent time with my family in Ft. Worth. Harper got lots of attention from her Nana (my mom)! Grandparents are the best. In addition to lots of eating and relaxing and catching up on Mad Men Season Three, we took a trip to the Kimbell Art Museum and to the Botanical Gardens.

And lastly, no one makes Harper laugh like her dad (if you can hear her over Brent's enthusiastic sound effects)!

Two months, Hot Springs and Halloween

I love October for many reasons, but perhaps the greatest reason is the annual trip Brent and I make to Hot Springs for the documentary film festival. Brent and I went to Hot Springs on our honeymoon seven years ago--a fact that we make fun of ourselves about--and on that trip we watched a film and learned about the festival. Since then we have gone every year, and this year marks our eighth time to go. Although we didn't know how the trip might change with Harper in tow, we knew this sacred tradition could not be interrupted.

Riding in style on the luggage carrier

Fall colors in Hot Springs

We saw two documentaries (instead of our typical 15 or so), ate at some amazing restaurants, went shopping and took a long hike. Harper was a pro traveler! She slept well in the car and in the hotel and mostly slept soundly through the documentaries.

Me and Harper on our hotel balcony

Our favorite documentary of the two we viewed was called "The Best Worst Movie." It's about the arguably "worst" movie ever made back in 1989 called "Troll 2." For example, "Troll 2" bears no relation whatsoever to "Troll 1" and does not even have trolls in the movie (but rather goblins)!

However, it is such a bad movie that it has developed a cult following in pockets all over the world. The documentary tracked down the actors from the movie, now 20 years later, and examined the cult following phenomenon. After seeing many glimpses of "Troll 2" from the documentary, Brent and I were convinced we had to rent this jewel of a movie and perhaps throw a "Troll 2" party of our own someday.

Here is the child star of "Troll 2" and the filmmaker of the documentary.

In other news, Harper is now two months old and is doing great! She has made a recent attachment...her "seahorse friend," as we like to call him. This little guy (which is nearly as big as she is) lights up and plays slow lullabies along with bubble sounds--she loves it! It helps soothe her to sleep and motivates her to do tummy time. I might be buying this as a shower gift for people in the future because it's been such an unexpected, hilarious hit!

Harper has now transitioned to her own crib. She seems so tiny in the big space! It made me a little sad for her not to be in our room anymore at night, but she's doing great!

And finally here are some pics from Harper's Halloween costumes--a little pumpkin suit and someone also gave her a cute little strawberry outfit. Our church small group had a Halloween party, and it was very fun to see all the kids dressed up!

Doesn't everybody hang out on the couch in a strawberry outfit?

6 Weeks Old

It's hard to believe that Harper is 6 weeks old now! We are having such a great time with her and love seeing her start to develop more and more. Here is some of what she has been up to in the last few weeks...

Harper rocking the tummy time!

Inadvertently batting at all the hanging animals in her activity gym

One of Harper's first bottles...she concentrates very hard with her fists pulled in close...that bow is most definitely over the top!

Harper is also smiling more and more and cooing. Below are some examples of her winsome smile...

Harper has always been such a stretcher! She will spend about five minutes stretching in the morning or after a nap.

Harper is a good little bather, but she doesn't care for water in her face too much, just like her Mom

Matt and Carolyn visited from out of town...Matt had the magic touch and Harper was out for hours in his arms.

Mimi bought the cousins matching pumpkin bibs...Harper sure loves to have a cousin to lean on!

First Photo Shoot

We've been taking a ton of pictures of Harper since her birth, but we didn't have many shots with all 3 of us in it. Therefore, we thought it might be time for our first foray into the world of family photography. Consider us initiated!

In hindsight, I would have preferred to use a photographer based out of a home, which would be more suitable for a newborn's needs. However, the ones we contacted were already booked up, so we went the route of the strip-mall studio session. Kids in soccer uniforms running around, bright lights, teenage-looking photographers hustling us through...not so ideal.

After one nursing session in the women's bathroom and another in the car, I was about ready to throw in the towel. We persevered and somehow got some decent shots out of it. Harper was a trooper throughout, but we felt bad for all that we put her through at 3 weeks old!

Here's what Harper had to say about the experience. Sorry, girl!

Two weeks and going strong!

We have passed the two week mark now, and although we are tired, of course, I am starting to feel a little more adjusted, I think. It has been so wonderful having Brent off work most days these past two weeks, and when Brent has gone to work, my mom was there to help out. Tuesday will be the start of just Harper and me in the day, so I hope we are able to manage that alright!

We had our two week check up and Harper is growing strong. She weighs 9 lbs. 14 ozs. now and is 22 1/8 inches long. She is in the 95th percentile for height and 90th percentile for weight. Go Harper!

We have, of course, been watching a lot of T.V. lately...often in the middle of the night. We are so ready for the fall shows to start. Seeing as we have TIVO but no cable, we are living off of reruns, game shows and late night shows. Netflix does come in handy, though, on the laptop. We are almost done with Season One of Man vs. Food. Pig-out challenges and extreme food never get old and usually leave me hungry and heading for the kitchen. 2nd dinner anyone?

Enjoy your labor day weekend!
